Spread evenly — don't overdo it. Spread a thin, even layer of the garlic butter onto each slice, all the way to the edges. Don't pile the butter on thick or it will soak into the bread and go soggy instead of crisping up — a thin layer is enough once the surface is covered, you don't need to use all the butter if the slices are already coated.
4 Cook it your way:
- Oven: Preheat to 200°C / 400°F. Lay the slices butter-side up on a baking tray and bake for 8–10 minutes, until the edges are crisp and golden and the Parmesan is lightly browned.
- Air Fryer: Preheat to 175°C / 350°F if your model requires it (some don't). Arrange the slices in a single layer with a little space around each one for airflow, and air fry for 5–6 minutes, checking at the 4-minute mark since air fryers vary a lot in strength.
5 Cool briefly, then serve. Let cool for 1–2 minutes before serving.

Note
Substitution note: if you don't have fresh garlic, use ½–1 tsp garlic powder to taste rather than a full 1:1 swap — garlic powder is more concentrated and won't taste identical to fresh.
You can swap the Parmesan for pecorino or a sharp cheddar. Want it extra cheesy? Add shredded mozzarella on top before cooking for a melty finish. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days once fully cooled. To reheat, the air fryer at 160°C / 320°F for 2–3 minutes brings back crispy edges much better than the microwave, which tends to leave the bread soft and chewy instead of crisp. You can also freeze un-cooked buttered slices in a single layer, then transfer to a freezer bag once solid — cook straight from frozen, adding a couple of extra minutes.
